Yakima HoldUp EVO 2 Bike Rack

The HoldUp EVO is the new version of the best selling HoldUp, one of the strongest, most versatile and best designed bike racks available. This new version has been redesigned with an easy access KickStart foot pedal tilt mechanism which makes lowering and raising the rack a cinch, even with bikes loaded. It also now features Yakima's SpeedKnob for mounting the rack to your hitch, again making the job even easier than before. We consider the original HoldUp as one of the best choices available and the new HoldUp EVO adds to an already great design to give those who want just a bit more from their carrier what they're looking for.

It comes with tray adjustability, meaning less bike-to-bike interference. Plus its StrongArm system allows for no frame contact when securing your bikes, making it a great choice for carbon frame bikes or anyone who has concerns about damage in transit. It's also quite a good looking bike carrier, with nice finishes and high-quality materials.

Out of the box the HoldUp EVO carries two bikes, and it can be extended to accommodate four bikes with the optional HoldUp EVO +2.

Versatility is definitely also a strong point, it takes nearly all bikes with 20inch to 29inch wheels and almost any size or shape of frame. It has moveable trays to adjust bike positions, and the StrongArm design also avoids any frame contact by securing just the front wheel. Maximum weight limit is 23kgs per bike, with a maximum wheelbase of 122cm, and 4.8 inch maximum tyre width. The impressive weight capacity also makes the HoldUp EVO capable of carrying E-bikes under 23kg, if your bike is heavier please see the original HoldUp, which has a higher weight capacity of 27kg per bike.

The HoldUp EVO folds flat against your vehicle when not in use, so it's out of the way when not in use, allowing you to leave it on your car if you're planning to use it again in the near future. Plus it comes with integrated locks for both the carrier and bikes, which can be matched to other Yakima products for single key convenience. The 81cm cable locks for your bikes also retract neatly into the carrier after use. You can key alike your Yakima products by purchasing lock cores which can be found in our Spare Keys & Locks shop category. If you have any further questions about key matching please contact us for more information.

It comes out of the box requiring very minimal assembly so you can be out on the trails even quicker, installation is a 25 minute job and all necessary tools are included. Please refer to the video and fitting instructions below for further details.

This new version is more expensive than its predecessor, yet we think it's worth the money, the improvements make one of the best quality and strongest racks available even better, plus it's covered by Yakima's lifetime warranty.

If you'd like to learn more about the HoldUp EVO you can contact us anytime with your questions, or read this independent review of the Yakima HoldUp EVO, discussing both its strengths and weaknesses.

This carrier suits 50mm (2 inch) receivers only, check to see if it will fit your vehicle using the Yakima Hitch Fitting Guide below.

Please check your hitch rating and local state laws before using this carrier.

Sturdy, easy to use, but concerns about secure attachment, locking mechanism, and longevity of locking mechanism - needs improvement. Lock and key system is not obvious when it locks, if not used right, it can get stuck on your car and you need to disassemble the mechanism. Safety pin is too small and insecure. But, super easy to use and steady on car. Recommend watching youtube videos to fully understand how to use the hitch mechanism. Be sure to push down the wheel arch support firmly *behind* the peak of the wheel, next to the fork, else it may not work.

I bought the HoldUp Evo 2 rather than the Thule equivalent partly on price, partly on bulk (the Thule takes up more space on and off the car) and partly because I wanted to be able to add the Plus 2 extension to the Yakima so I could take four bikes. Overall it has been a good purchase, although I mainly use it for two bikes at a time - one of which is an E-MTB. The rack goes on and off the hitch-mount easily (once you've mastered the art and as long as you're strong enough to lift it). I like the fact that it locks onto the hitch-mount too, and the 'wobbling' problems that some people have mentioned when driving can be avoided if you wiggle the rack around a bit as you're tightening it onto the hitch-mount. On the downside it does have a couple of weak points in its design/construction. First, if you have 29 inch wheels you need to be very careful to position the front wheel clamp as close to the forks as possible (ie well over the arch of the wheel) to avoid the front wheel bouncing out of the wheel holder. Before I realised this I once got home to find one bike hanging off the rack and held on only by the rear wheel strap and the fact that its handlebars had become entangled in the bike next to it when it moved. User-error probably, but something to be aware of. More problematic for me has been that although the rack is advertised as taking the weight of an e-bike, the plastic bolts built into the rear wheel clamps don't seem strong enough. I've had two of those break in the year that I've had the rack, and I've ended up replacing them both with a stainless steel bolt which I bought from Bunnings. This has only been a problem when I've been carrying my E-MTB, not the standard bike. It's not an expensive fix, and perhaps something the factory should consider. Another problem I've had has been the built-in lock cable jamming in its housing so I was unable to use/move it. Living in Brisbane I was able to take the rack into the Yakima supplier and they fixed it for me, but it was irritating nevertheless. I should say that the customer service I've had from Yakima with these problems has been great, both in replacing broken parts and in fixing the lock when I went in to see them. However, given the price of the rack it would have been good if the design was such that the problems didn't occur in the first place. I would give this a 5 for its overall usability but marked down to a 4 because of the niggles I mention above.
