Yakima Dr.Tray Bike Rack

Evolution not revolution is what Yakima does best, with every new model they improve, working from a solid and tried base, they continually identify and rectify issues with new designs and technologies. The Dr.Tray bike rack is a fine example of this evolution when compared to the HoldUp.

When simply looking at the two carriers, at first glance you'd be forgiven for thinking they are the same, the truth is far from that, with a number of changes with this new model.

The most noticeable difference is weight, specifically the lack of it. At just 16kg the Doctor is miles ahead of the HoldUp at 23kg, that is 7kg less, or roughly 2 adult cats. Yakima claims that this is the lightest 50mm hitch mounted 2 bike carrier in the world. It's a huge improvement anyway you cut it, and is noticed most when tilting the carrier or fitting the carrier to your hitch.

It's also physically smaller in all dimensions than the HoldUp, but still retains the same flexibility as the HoldUp in terms of the range of bike sizes it can carry.

This is a two bike tow-hitch mounted bike carrier, with the additional EZ+1 Add-On an extra bike can be transported. The HoldUp has the advantage in this sense, as it can expand to allow a total 4 bike capacity.

Dr.Tray also has locks on both the hitch mounting and each bike mount, giving you full security with the ability to match keys with your other locks. It uses Yakima's SpeedKnob system to secure and lock the carrier to your hitch with no tools required.

Another great new feature is the QuickChange lever, giving you the ability to adjust the distance between your bikes while they're loaded, with no tools. The carrier also boasts a maximum distance between bikes of 45cm, again an improvement, and maybe the best in its class.

The RemoteControl tilt lever is also revised, with better placement and design to make the job of tilting the carrier easier when you need to open the boot or hatch, and also gives improved overall rear clearance.

With Dr.Tray you can accommodate a wide range of bikes, with a maximum allowable tire width of 4.8inches and between 26inch and 29inch diameter wheels. Weight capacity is 18kg per bike, allowing a total weight of 36kg, Yakima has compromised slightly compared to the HoldUp in this area, in favour of weight reduction.

The carrier makes use of a similar bike securing system as the HoldUp, and so only holds the bike by the wheels, avoiding harm to your bike's frame, making it great for carbon bikes.
