We often get asked what options there for those needing some help getting a kayak on the roof.

Have a look at the few options outlined below and if you need any further help, please give us a call at Roof Rack Store on 02 9666 4844

The Granddaddy of all kayak self loaders is the Thule Hullavator 898. There’s a new updated version just out called the 898 Hullavator Pro. Basically it consists of a couple of cradles attached to gas assist struts that drop down the side of the car to help you get your craft up on the roof and back down again. Perfect for those with heavy craft (up to 35kg), those who’ve had shoulder reconstruction/surgery and anyone else who needs a hand.

All of the other options involve loading from the rear of the vehicle.

The Yakima SweetRoll  is probably the best unit currently on the market. With the inbuilt rollers on the rear cradles it makes it super easy to load for any kayak or canoe up to 36kg. Just lift the front of the craft onto the rear roller, then lift the rear and roll away! It also comes with front and rear tie downs as well as another set of tie downs to secure craft to the cradles.

The Thule DockGlide is another great option.  These cradles consist of a pair of rubber faced cradles for the front and a set of felt faced cradles for the rear. Once again a rear loading carrier where the wet craft sits on the slippery material on the rear cradle and is slid forward onto the grippier rubber faced units. 35kg max load capacity and one pair of tie downs included.

Please check with your State or Territory roads authority to make sure any loads being carried comply with all relevant local laws and regulations.
